What Size Bed Should I Get?
Getting a great night’s sleep is about more than having a good quality mattress, although that factor is critically important. It’s also about having a bed that’s spacious enough for your comfort. So how do you know the right size mattress to buy? Here are a few things to consider:
Know your sizes
Mattresses typically come in a range of standard sizes:
- Twin: 38” W x 75” L
- Twin XL: 38” W x 80” L
- Full: 54” W x 75” L
- Queen: 60” W x 80” L
- King: 76” W x 80” L
- California King (or Cal King): 72” W x 84” L
Twin beds offer enough room for a child or average-sized adult sleeping alone, while a twin XL is more advisable for taller folks (they’re the size you’d usually find in a college dorm). While a full-sized bed can sleep two, it might be cozy for a pair of adults. These are often used for kids who have outgrown a twin-sized bed and who want a little more room. Queen beds are the most popular size, and this size or above is most likely the best choice for a couple sleeping together.
Consider your room
Although a bedroom is primarily used for sleeping, you don’t want your bed to be the only thing that fits in there. Measure the space, the furniture you already own that you’d like to keep in there with your new bed, and then measure out the area that your new bed would take up. Make sure that you’ll have sufficient space to walk around in the new arrangement.
Pick what’s right for you
The right choice of mattress size depends ultimately on you and your sleeping situation. Are you or your partner exceptionally tall? Do you like to have room to spread out, or do you prefer to cuddle up? Do you have kids who like to crawl into bed with you in the wee hours, or pets who spurn their own beds to sleep at your feet (or on your head)?
Once you’ve taken the size of your bedroom into consideration, answering these questions can help you decide if you want to get the biggest bed that will comfortably fit in the space you have available, or if you’d be happier in something smaller. For example, really tall adults are likely to prefer a Cal King, which offers extra inches of room to accommodate long legs, while a couple that wants to leave a space for their preschooler to crawl in between them might prefer a regular King, which includes extra inches of width. You may also want extra space if you have a restless partner whose nighttime tossing and turning might otherwise keep you up. What it ultimately comes down to is the right fit that allows you to have good night’s sleep.
